Types of Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is a reconstructive surgery, not a cosmetic procedure. There are various techniques, including:
Implant Reconstruction: Involves using an implant to restore breast volume post-mastectomy. It can be done in two stages with a temporary expander or in a single stage using a biologic dermal mesh.
Latissimus Dorsi Flap Reconstruction: Uses muscle, fat, and skin from the back, keeping blood supply intact, to create a breast shape. This can be done with or without an implant.
DIEP Flap: Transfers skin and fat from the lower abdomen to the chest, combining a tummy tuck with breast reconstruction. Blood vessels from the donor site are connected to chest vessels using microsurgery.
